Sceptical Reflections About Ontology

Ontologies (and Metaphysics) are floating around since Plato and Aristotle. Although these things have often been declared as non-existent, or as outright nonsense and frauds, nevertheless, rigorous, cold-blooded and definite proofs for these unfriendly judgements seem still to be lacking. The adjective sceptical in the title of the present paper is, of course, a polite euphemism. For we can sh...

On the Modal Content of A Posteriori Necessities

This article challenges the Kripkean interpretation of a posteriori necessities. It will be demonstrated, by an analysis of classic examples, that the modal content of supposed a posteriori necessities is more complicated than the Kripkean line suggests. We will see that further research is needed concerning the a priori principles underlying all a posteriori necessities. In the course of this ...

Moreover, (1) is an instance of a more general pattern whose validity doesn’t seem to depend on the specific meanings of the words in (1). The adverb ‘quickly’, for example, can be replaced with any of a wide range of adverbs without loss of validity; analogous remarks hold for the...
